Congratulations to LeAnn Frobom for being the winner of The Artful Bird: Feathered Friends to Make & Sew, by Abigail Patner Glassenberg. To qualify for the book drawing, I asked readers last week to name their favorite bird. “What a cool book!” said LeAnn. “I love the page with the feather options. My favorite bird is the cardinal.”
Other birds that were popular include the ones shown below, represented by handmade items on Etsy. Can you spot the robin, hummingbird, blue heron, shama thrush, cardinal and geese? Can you identify the other birds? Click on any photo to see if you’re right.

LeAnn is a fellow teammate of Blogging Business Artisans, a small group of Etsy sellers who cross-promote each other’s shops while blogging and socializing with each other. Her Etsy shop is Pasque Flower Creations, where she sells her functional fabric products that include oven mitts, baby bibs, bunting, bags. journal covers, and more. The variety in LeAnn’s shop is perhaps a reflection of her eclectic background. “I’m a fabric fanatic, Etsy entrepreneur, quilter, retired administrative law judge, seasonal tax professional, empty-nester and grandma,” writes LeAnn at her blog, Ponderings.
A couple of last week’s readers mentioned they particularly liked the page in The Artful Bird about feather textures you can produce with different materials and techniques. In my post, I pointed out that the feathers of a bird sculpture are where a mixed media artist can really use her imagination. If you are interested in introducing fabric textures into your mixed media art projects, some resources you may find helpful include the following books from the sewing world. Most of these are available on Amazon.com, but others can be found on Abebooks.com or in your local library:
- Jazz It Up: 101 Stitching & Embellishing Techniques, by Judy Murrah
- Easy Embellishments for Creative Sewing, published by House of White Birches and edited by Barbara Weiland
- Fabric Manipulation: 150 Creative Sewing Techniques, by Ruth Singer
- Fabric Origami: Variations of Shark’s Teeth, by Linda Chang Teufel
- The Art of Manipulating Fabric, by Colette Wolff
- Sew Easy Embellishments, by Nancy Zieman

Congrats to LeAnn! Love the treasury along with the match up game — although the thrush was a stumper!
I am so thrilled to be the winner!! And thank you for sharing some items from my shop. I am definitely eclectic!
What a fun game. I missed the thrush, too.
Wow, you found some cool birds to feature! I’m heading over to check out that hawk mask. It looks really intense!
